Burj Khalifa – world’s tallest building
Burj Khalifa is a skyscraper in Dubai and ,at 828 m height, the tallest building in the world. The construction began in 2004 and was completed on 1 October 2009. The total cost for the Burj Khalifa project was about US$1.5 billion; and for the entire new “Downtown Dubai”, US$20 billion and Dubai was forced it to seek billion-dollar bailouts from its oil-rich neighbor Abu Dhabi.
Burj Khalifa will include 30,000 homes, 9 hotels, at least 19 residential towers, the Dubai Mall, 3 hectares of parkland and the 12-hectare artificial Burj Khalifa Lake.
The building has returned the location of Earth’s tallest free-standing structure to the Middle East — where almost 4 millennia the Great Pyramid of Giza was the tallest structure. The decision to build Burj Khalifa is based on the attempt to diversify from an oil-based economy to a service and tourism oriented one.
According to officials, it is necessary for projects like Burj Khalifa to be built in the city to gain international attention, and with it, investment.
